With all of the cooking technology that exists these days, such as stand mixers and food processors, you butter believe that its super easy to make your own delicious butter at home. No churn required!
Store-bought butter has nothing on homemade butter! You can taste the freshness and can customize the salt content and add fun flavors when you make your own butter at home. The byproduct of butter making is buttermilk, which you can use in recipes such as pancakes and fried chicken.
The only equipment that you need to make your own butter is some sort of automated mixer (hand or stand mixer, food processor or blender), a sieve, bowl, cheese cloth and cups to measure the ingredients with. Follow the below method to make 1/2 pound of butter (2 sticks).
Pour 3 cups of room-temperature heavy whipping cream into a bowl. I use my KitchenAid stand mixer and fit it with the whisk attachment. Letting the whipping cream warm up for about 30 minutes speeds up the butter-making process.
Begin mixing the cream at a medium to high speed. After 2-3 minutes you'll have whipped cream, but don't stop there, keep mixing. In about 4-5 minutes, the butter fat will begin to separate from the buttermilk.
Once all of the fat solids attach to the whisk and there is a complete separation of buttermilk from butter, drain the buttermilk and keep for another use.
Pour 1 cup of ice cold water into the mixer and continue to mix. This will rinse the extra buttermilk out of the butter. Once the water becomes cloudy, drain it out of the bowl and discard it.
Repeat this process until the water is clear after mixing. Drain any extra water.
Add 1 teaspoon of salt or other flavorings and mix thoroughly.
Remove butter from mixing bowl and thoroughly squeeze out the extra water using a cheesecloth.
Mold the butter into your desired shape and enjoy! Store in an airtight container. If you squeezed out all of the excess buttermilk, the butter should last for 2-3 weeks in the fridge.
